Billy the Kid : la série captivante sur le hors-la-loi légendaire
Introduction
The Billy the Kid series is an American drama western, created by Michael Hirst.
It takes us back to the 19th century, during the conquest of the American West, and recounts the rise and tragic fate of Billy the Kid, alias William H. Bonney.
From his humble beginnings, immigration, poverty, and the harsh realities of the frontier shape the young man before he becomes one of the most famous outlaws in history.

- Season 2(2023): Deepens his role in the Lincoln County War, with more action and political tension.

Each season follows the dramatic and historic evolution of Billy's story, from his humble beginnings to the Lincoln County War, through the conflicts, betrayals, and moral dilemmas that punctuate his life.
The main characters
Here are some of the pillars of the series:
- Billy the Kid / William H. Bonney (Tom Blyth): the protagonist, played by Tom Blyth. A young immigrant of Irish descent who became an outlaw, whose tragic trajectory is at the heart of the series.
- Jesse Evans (Daniel Webber): one of the main characters, often in conflict or tension with Billy.
- Kathleen McCarty (Eileen O'Higgins): Billy's mother, a central figure in his childhood.
- Pat Garrett (Alex Roe): future sheriff, whose complex relationship with Billy is at the heart of the series.
- Other secondary characters gravitate around Billy: his family, allies, enemies, figures from the West, ranchers, gunmen, profiteers from the Santa Fe Ring, etc. This enriches the universe and the stakes, immersing the viewer in the complex and violent atmosphere of the era.
The appeal of the series lies in the fact that it doesn't just portray a legendary outlaw, but a man with doubts, choices, and wounds, which makes the characters more profound and less caricatured.
Why watch Billy the Kid?
Overall public opinion and criticism
- On the critical side: the first season received mixed reviews. Some feel that, despite its good premise and strong acting, the series never rises above a “basic level,” which may frustrate those who were hoping for a masterpiece.
- On the viewer side: overall, opinions are more positive. Fans of westerns and historical narratives appreciate the atmosphere, immersion, and reinterpretation of the myth.
Some point out that season 2 has outperformed season 1, with more enthusiastic reviews.
Additional information / specific points
- One of the series' main themes is immigration. Billy (who is originally from Ireland) arrives in America with his family, and this social and historical context is used to evoke hope, disillusionment, exclusion, the dream of a better life... before harsh realities set in.
- The series does not simply glorify an outlaw: it raises questions about justice, the plight of immigrants, the relationship between violence and survival, and the line between legend and reality. This more nuanced perspective sets it apart from many “classic” Westerns.
- For fans of modern westerns who enjoy dark, realistic atmospheres and complex characters, Billy the Kid offers a welcome alternative to the stereotypes of the genre.
Our opinion
Although I'm not usually a fan of Western series or “cowboy” universes, Billy the Kid pleasantly surprised me. The series achieves a truly successful blend: it retains the codes, costumes, and visual authenticity of the Wild West while adopting a modern and dynamic staging. The result is a revisited Western, both faithful to its era and perfectly accessible to today's audience.
The story is very immersive, and each episode leaves you wanting to watch the next one. The pace is well-controlled, with enough tension and highlights to keep us on the edge of our seats. The action scenes are particularly well choreographed: the shootouts are fluid and believable, and the way Billy shoots, his accuracy, speed, and confidence, bring a lot of charisma to the character. Tom Blyth plays a Billy the Kid who is intense, human, and fascinating, making the character very well-rounded and endearing.
Overall, the cast is solid: no actor seems to be holding back, and each one brings something important to the story. Even though I'm not usually a fan of Westerns, this series is clearly an exception. I highly recommend it, both for its atmosphere and for its more emotional and modern approach to the myth.
The only minor criticism I could make is that the series sometimes lacks memorable duels; we would have liked to see a few more “iconic” confrontations, typical of the genre. But that doesn't detract from the overall quality of the series.
Conclusion
Billy the Kid is an ambitious series that attempts to reconcile the myth of the legendary outlaw with the real man, with his fears, hopes, and contradictions. It captivates viewers with its universe, settings, atmosphere, and desire to humanize a historical figure who is often caricatured. But it can also be divisive: for some, the balance between drama, realism, and artistic freedom is lacking, and the series does not always achieve the depth one might hope for.
If you like westerns, dark stories, tortured characters, and tales that blend history and fiction, Billy the Kid is definitely worth watching. And even if the experience leaves you with mixed feelings, it offers an interesting perspective on the myth of the Wild West.
